Boring and pointless. Like a live-action remake missing the charm and soul of its source material. It was also awkward and cringey because Cabot was trying to replicate the tone of the original series while also portraying Mia as an adult with adult problems. Like that was going to work. I wish she either utilized every convention of the original series (namely Mia being an absolute satire of a character) or committed fully to writing an adult novel for an adult audience.

I always knew they would end up together and now they are having twins!?!?! Excuse me as I go cry of happiness in a corner somewhere. And don't get me started on how Mia's parents got back together because I'll just cry harder.
It had been a while since I'd read any of Meg Cabot's books, so I didn't know what to expect. I should've expected...goodness. Mia is just as charming as ever. Of course, I have to get past my movie baggage to remember that her father is alive and well in the books and that Grandmere ain't exactly Dame Julie Andrews. That said, I love the Grandmere who drinks Sidecars and has a poodle who humps things. Fun times.
And that's the bottom line on this book: reads like butter and a whole lot of fun. I especially loved Michael and Mia's relationship. The funny part was me not realizing this was an adult installment and having to look on the back of the book to see that. Doh! Even so, it flows smoothly and still really isn't that bad at all. I'd let my 13 year old read this. (From the girl who was reading North and South and filching Harlequins at that age)
Royally delightful!

I read this because I have read the rest of the series, and while it was a bit of fun, I don't know that this book was really necessary. At times Mia just seemed like a teenager pretending to be a grown up - was she always like that? Michael is a saving grace though, as is Lilly. Lars has some great lines to make you smile. It was a fun easy holiday read.

Mia from The Princess Diaries all grown up. If you liked the YA series, you'll like this adult novel.
