I’m so sorry to say this, but I picked this up largely because I was interested to hear more about Pete’s presidential run. I’M SORRY, CHASTEN! YOU ARE GREAT ALL ON YOUR OWN!
I loved how candid he was with all aspects of life, including the fact that he didn’t finish college on the timeline that society expects of us. Any success story that balks at societal norms earns a top spot in my ratings. He let us into what it felt like for him growing up as a gay kid with internalized homophobia and how that colored his dating life. He was very open about how he felt being thrust into this surprising light as the spouse of a presidential candidate, a spot he never thought he’d be in.
…but I really loved hearing about his life with Pete, or Peter as apparently he’s known by those closest to him.
I always struggle with reviewing memoirs because who am I to tell someone else how to tell their story? That said, I’ve read a LOT of memoirs and Chasten’s delivery was so engaging. The writing was captivating, but also he narrated with such personality I felt like he was actually talking to me.
I know this is an old one, but if you’ve not read this one yet, definitely recommend adding to your TBR!

The book is fun! The parts about Chasten and Pete starting to date and fall in love are adorable. Chasten is super relatable as well, and that makes their relationship relatable. The last third was about the campaign trail and that was probably the part that dragged the most, but it was still an enjoyable listen.
Chasten’s not even that much older than me, but listening to the book largely felt like having a coffee with an older member of the queer community and chatting about how being gay had worked out for him. There’s definitely more to the book than his sexuality, but that’s absolutely the majority of it.
The other parts that were really moving were Chasten’s discussions about student debt and medical debt. Without getting too personal there, I’ll just say I really appreciated that part of the story. There’s an anecdote about how Pete finally found out about the amount of debt Chasten was in and helped him out before saying, “Seeing a person you love walking a little lighter, knowing they’re cared for and going to be okay, is a far better feeling than having money." (Chapter 9) Idk, that was just a line that really hit me in the feels.
Anyway, like I said, the book was fun. I'll probably re-listen to the chapter about their first date at random times when I need a reminder that we have queers in high places and that gay first dates can be beautiful.

I love Chasten, I have seen a lot of interviews with him and I am a masive fan of Pete, but I did not enjoy this book as much as I thought, it is a very short book but I felt like the writing made the story drag longer than it should have, but I did enjoy learning more about him and him upbringing .
