It started off well, found myself flying through the first part, but I definitely felt like I was dragging myself along through the second half. I think the history of it is fascinating and I appreciate that the author brought Alison Balfour’s struggle to life, but it did become a struggle to keep going as everything got worse and worse for her and then everything got suddenly resolved in the last 20 pages for Erin.

Really fun read! While the ending felt a bit anti-climactic and the overall story wasn’t especially substantial, it was still an enjoyable experience. Would’ve been the perfect fall read (even though I read it at the end of spring, oops).

There were definitely some missing pieces that could’ve made the story feel more complete. A few of the reveals and twists didn’t fully land or lacked the buildup needed to make them feel earned. That said, I really enjoyed the voice of the novel, and I’ve heard the author’s other books are stronger. I’m definitely curious to check out more of their work.

Love CJ Cooke ! All her books are so entrancing and plunge you in the beauty and mystery and sadness of the way women have been treated historically, and still are. She plunges you in the beautiful landscape of the Scottish Isles which make the book feel so immersive. I liked the Lighthouse Witches better, but this was still a great read
