A spooky and sometimes horrific story about both a woman in 1500s Scotland and a teenager in present day who has survived a terrible fire. A satisfying ending, too.

This was fine. Good. A bit hard to follow. Both Erin's and Alison's tales were heartbreaking, but both were also intricate. And the switching back and forth made things difficult. The introduction of new characters (Mr. Couper, the two Stewart brothers, the Brother, Edina, etc.) made it even more difficult for me, especially when those characters had new arcs late in the story and during the twist. Overall this was good, and I liked the wrap-up, but it wasn't mu favorite.

Absolutely stunning blend of historical fact and illustrative fiction. So much care and research went into this story. I was completely enraptured from start to finish. The flow of the book and the introduction of the characters was so clear and easy to follow that I can imagine reading this in one go. Completely immersive and fully invested in the characters’ respective story arches. Fully recommend.
