Nothing yanks me out of the story more than typos and errors where the name is obviously wrong. There were a few of these. It's an interesting pair of concurrent storylines although I found the pacin uneven at times.

1. Borrowed from the library, don’t want to renew and it’s not available to borrow digitally through my libraries.
2. It required more attention. I just finished God of the Woods, and have very little patience for mystery in which GotW took all my m’f patience.
3. Thus far it is wonderfully and curiously written. I just want to read more fun things. The mother MCs are burdened with a lot too that I don’t think I can handle right now as I am too.
I can’t wait to give it a fair shot and finish!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins for the advance reader copy.
It’s taken me a while to write a review of this book because I found it took around 30% of the book for me to interested and then I found I wanted to finish it to know what the point of the book was.
I don’t think this book was for me as I found the pacing a bit slow. I wasn’t a huge fan of the switched POV’s each chapter and would have preferred a block of chapters.
Overall I think a lot of people will enjoy this but unfortunately this wasn’t for me.

This historical fiction novel had a touch of magic or horror, depending on how you look at it. The best part of the book was the story of the first woman burned as a witch (not a spoiler) in Orkney in the late 1500s.
Graphic: Bullying, Death, Drug use, Emotional abuse, Gore, Mental illness, Sexual content, Suicidal thoughts, Terminal illness, Toxic relationship, Vomit, Medical content, Grief, Medical trauma, Pregnancy, Fire/Fire injury, Abandonment, Injury/Injury detail
Dark, atmospheric and sometimes terrifying, Cooke brings us a tale that occurs on the Orkney Islands. A young woman and her boyfriend get caught up in something as we weave back and forth between events that occurred when a woman was wrongly accused of witchcraft and murder four centuries ago.
In the present day storyline, a mother searches for answers after her daughter ends up in the hospital. Erin, along with her friend and boyfriend, traveled to the remote Orkney Islands. Something sinister happened on that island. Erin is badly burned and keeps saying her name is Nyx. Her boyfriend is dead and her friend is missing. We learned of events along with Erin’s mother Clem, who worries her daughter will be blamed. The island and the secular group she meets gave me chills.
The author recounts events on the island in 1594, involving Alison Belford, who is accused of witchcraft and consorting with the devil. We see the story unfold and twist. The trials, the betrayal, and the people on the island shared a horrific tale. If you find the witch trials fascinating, you will want to read this tale.
While the events of 2024 were creepy, it was Alison’s story that held me captive. Cooke blends history, fantasy and delivers a suspenseful thriller that pushes into the horror genre.
The Book of Witching is a story you will remember long after you have closed the book. It is the perfect fall book for your spooky reading list. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer
