Maybe 2.5 ⭐️. I wanted to like it, but a lot of the plot just wasn’t fleshed out. It was just— meh. Wouldn’t recommend.

Two young women, four hundred years apart in Scotland, are seemingly bound by the book of with craft. The modern day story line focuses on Clem and her daughter Erin. Clem's determined to learn what caused an accident that left Erin burned and unconscious on a beach in the Orkney Islands. When Erin comes to, not only does she not remember her family, but insists she is named Nyx.
The other story line focuses on Alison, a healer who is awaiting trial for charges of witchcraft. Alison knows who committed the crimes she's accused of, but unfortunately they are the same people overseeing her trial.
How these two story lines connected made for an enjoyable, but sometimes slow reading journey.

3.5/4 stars.
I liked the premise of this story, I think that perhaps I was expecting a little more fantasy and less historical fiction with a drop of magic.
I still enjoyed the story though and it is well written as I spent most of the time feeling angry at the injustices imparted upon women. But wasn't quite what I'd hoped for, so I'm the problem, not the book.

I love C.J Cooke's writing. Going from the past to the present but the tone always being so tense and mysterious is just so good. I can't get enough.
