Interesting. I had a hunch about what was going on halfway through, but was still shocked when the truth came out. Especially at the end. Oh was THAT a surprise. Let the chaos begin!

A great idea. Really. But the execution... Overall, rather predictable and kind of confusing. How Cassel's brothers get him to do so many awful things with little persuasion isn't really explained. And I knew from the fourth chapter or so that Lila was a cat and Cassel had transformed her, which took most of the fun out of it. Plus, he just goes back to school in the end. I mean, I know that's how things really happen, but in books, characters are destined for more after great trials of pain and furry. No, that wasn't a typo. Also, Cassel's mom is kind of a bitch.
Meh. I wanted to like it but I couldn't get into it. Part of it was extremely predictable, and I found myself wandering off while listening. I couldn't get invested in any of the characters and didn't really care about the ending. I have no interest in reading more in the series. I like the Elfhame books but this was not it for me.

One of my new (to me) faves from Holly Black. I loved Cassel, even if it wasn't always fun to share his gritty world. Tight, constantly surprising plot that really kept me guessing, and still has me wondering where the sequel will go. (But trust that this story DOES have a satisfying ending, even if you decide not to complete the rest of the trilogy.) Highly recommended if you like stories with con artists, or crime families, and of course, magic in a world pretty much like ours.
It's a YA urban fantasy. And exactly what you'd expect from such. Black's done more interesting work.
