I love Alyssa Cole's books. She's a master of crafting engaging romances that aren't all fluff, but tackle historic and social commentary. I'd say that the main characters fall for eachother pretty fast, but if that actually bothered me I wouldn't read so much romance.

Definitely a bit more on the suspenseful side--at least for me haha. I was glad I knew it was a romance so I could read on without getting overly tense because I knew I'd get a happy ending.

Really like how nuanced this book is and that there's no "simple evil." Even Suzie, who's The Worst. I love how Elle and Malcolm both reflect on how even though slavery is obviously evil, it complicates the lives of everyone it touches, no matter how close or distant, and there aren't easy answers to anything. Elle wonders quite plainly how the diametrically opposed views of the North and South can be overcome once the war ends. There are no absolutes voiced or snap judgments about the choices people make given the hand they're dealt.
