I really like the particular way in which the characters/society in this book are not obsessed with sex.
I mean also the story and the characters, but it's unusual to have a book with a female protagonist in this age target where sex is neither obsessed over nor made to seem like it doesn't exist.

So far, I've found the books in this series to be way too short. There is way too much story in here to be packed into a 264 page book with big words. Large amounts of time in the story is just skimmed over, and I turn the page (or move on to the next paragraph) to find out that months have passed.

That being said, the writing is well done and interesting. I find myself really drawn to the character of Alanna, and although she can be frustrating at times, I just really like her. In fact, I think all the characters are well done, even the evil ones. Sometimes it's hard to really get a feel for the characters, but that's because the book is just too darn short. I want more! But even things that would normally turn me off--a talking cat (or at least a cat that Alanna alone seems to be able to understand) would usually drive me batty, but I didn't mind him here at all.

I think this series would be a wonderful one for young girls (and boys) just getting into reading. They seem to be quick, easy reads with lots of fun and adventure, although the characters do sleep together (off screen), so that's something to be aware of. Overall this is a fun read for fantasy readers, and a great way to pass a couple of hours.

My childhood favorite. Nostolgia completely has decided the 5 star rating but I have no shame.

Still good, but I found Roger a boring villian and it's very weird to me how Alanna was kissed multiple times with dubious consent by older men and the story treats this as romantic?

literally impossible for me to be objective about this series, it’s so foundational to who i am as a person. alanna and jonathan are the blueprint i think if i knew what a forum was in fourth grade i would have drawn blood over ship wars.

so funny to think about everyone alanna knows being fully aware there’s some big secret there but they’re all just like well . alan will come out to us when he’s ready. alex thinks he has her and jon’s deal completely figured out (mostly correct but he's also projecting) & he’s rly hurt that alan doesn’t trust him enough to be open w him. roger figures out jon and alanna are sleeping together and goes straight from “i need to figure out what alan’s deal is” to “i need to kill my nephews stupid little boyfriend”
