Another win from the Queen Catherine Cowles! Making my way through this series very quickly. Her audiobooks are so easy to put on while you’re working. They’re the perfect length for the workday and you don’t have to give all your attention to them.

Hadley has been half in love with Calder ever since she can remember. Him being best friends with her brother, he’s just always been around. When she’s older, they form their own bond and do mountain biking together. Now, it’s been four years since they had any real alone time together. He’s got sole custody of his twins, and he keeps his distance from Hadley whenever he can. Now after he almost lost her, he’s not wasting any time anymore. He’s going to get Hadley to trust him again if it’s the last thing he does.

Highlights:
📌 Small Town
📌 Brother’s Best Friend
📌 Single Dad
📌 Friend’s to Lovers
📌 Second Chance Adjacent

Hadley has spent her whole life living with the consequences of life after her sister was kidnapped. The extra precautions and the strict rules. She just needs to feel in control of her life. The person who saw her crumbling under all of it, even as a child, was her older brother's best friend, Calder. He shows her an outlet for all of her pent-up energy, a way to taste freedom when the world becomes too small.

But when tragedy strikes for Calder, he can't bring himself to be a part of the extreme anymore.

But this is a Catherine Cowles book... It's not as simple as finding a slice of freedom. Women are being attacked, women who look a lot like Hadley. Calder can't sit by and do nothing. In trying to keep her safe, Calder learns more about the women he tries to keep at arms length and realizes he can't do it anymore. For himself or his daughters.

I ADORED this story! It was my favorite from the Tattered and Torn series!

What I didn't love was Hadley's mom in this story. I understood her motivation. If something happened to one of my kids I would want to lock them up and burn down the world... but the way she spoke to Hadley as a grown adult made me want to run her over with a semi truck.

Note: An ARC was provided by Social Butterfly PR.

The one thing I've come to expect from Catherine Cowles's writing is the unexpected, and that's something that I tend to hope for with the romantic suspense genre. She once again delivers on the romance between Calder and Hadley, and I loved that feeling of family that they've created with Sage and Birdie. Speaking of family, Hadley's issues with her mother were heartrending, and I wish someone had stood up for Hadley with more conviction sooner. The suspense part also gets a thumbs up from me, and the person who turned out to be a villain was certainly one of my top suspects. Cowles gives us another five-plus-starred read with Falling Embers.

I want more of Hadley and Calder. The perfect duo from being kids to being adults. It made me so happy to see their love grow and play out throughout the span of this book. Now onto book #3!
