this was such an interesting book that is so hard to describe to others. it is a cozy gothic horror that was good but left a little to be desired. it would be such a good book club pick to discuss with a group

I don't know if I would classify this books as "horror" but it was definitely dark. A little disturbing, too - but that was really well done because supposedly the Blackwood sisters are insane, but in the end, while they undeniably are, the villagers and outsiders are the ones that appear as truly insane and they were the ones that really disturbed me. They are the worse of humanity and I honestly can't blame Constance and Merricat to live as recluses. Constance and Merricat are also a very interesting characters. Especially Merricat, and I could relate to her (which honestly makes me question things a lot hahaha) , just trying to live an orderly life where she's happy and appreciated. I too, wouldn't mind living on the moon. Their "insanity" actually is a very interesting way to set a contrasting tone with the world outside of their house, supposedly "normal" yet profoundly rotten and cruel and incredibly violent.

Definitely a book that's worth being called a "classic" and how interesting it would be to write an essay about it and study it more in depth.

HAUNTING book. I much prefer it to The Haunting of Hill House; I absolutely adored Merricat's point of view, and I loved her codependent relationship with her sister. It was such a tragedy and very intriguing.
