I suppose if I really wanted, I could write an essay length review about how great yet unrated this Dickens novella is. It is most likely Dickens best known work, and he hated it. Yet, there is very much here besides embracing the spirit of the season.
However, let’s cut straight to the point, okay?
Why don’t you want to listen to Rocky Horror perform a Christmas Carol?
See, I couldn’t think of a reason either.

Didn't read this version, but listened to the Audible version narrated by Hugh Grant. I've tried to somehow read this each December for the last few years, as it's a great reminder of how easily and quickly we can lose sight of what matters, and how greed and selfishness ultimately only hurts ourselves. An absolute favorite every year.

I somehow managed to graduate from a “good” public school without reading any classics. Or if I did read them, it was via an excerpt in a textbook. That being said, what a joy to read this as an adult! The humor wasn’t lost on me as I’m sure it would have been when I was a punk-ass teenager. I only wish I knew sooner what an accessible writer Dickens was.
So many stories radiate from this tale by Dickens. Is 'A Christmas Carol' a redemptive story, a social story, a seasonal story, a ghost story, an historical story or is it all of these and more? I choose to see all this and just as each person brings their own readership into a story so to does each new story maker/teller bring their influences. From film, animation to modern adaptation of text all of these offer something slightly different in the re-imagining or re-telling of this tale.
The fact that it has not ever been out of print says lots about our desire for stories that hold 'that' mirror up to our understanding of ourselves and our collective acceptable social practices.

Timeless. A fine story with an ending that will make you smile.
Just finished our family read-aloud for the season. I know the story but had never read it. This is what every student of literature (or HS English classes) should read as an introduction to Dickens to demonstrate how beautifully he can craft the language. This will be an annual event for us.
