Read for ATS1904: Reading the City

Despite being an unfortunately avid fan of the BBC Sherlock TV show, and much less shamefully a lover of the RDJ and Jude Law films, I have never actually read a Sherlock Holmes story and I have to say, I can see the appeal. Fucking excellent (especially when compared to the other reading this week, the bloody Poe crime story) and I got to feel smug about guessing the twist haha. I will quite probably listen to some more of these in the future.

Reading this book is like looking at a drawing stuck to a fridge.

At first, I felt like this short story had a lot of potential since the case of the missing husband fascinated me, but the ending was underwhelming. The reader couldn't quite follow Sherlock and his notion, that helped him solve the case, came out of nowhere.

I listened to it all as it was very short, but this is another of those 'look how clever I am' examples of the Holmes oeuvre.

This is a super short story in the Sherlock Holmes series and I really enjoyed it. It was one on my Victorian Lit course but by the time it came around to reading it I'd already planned what I was doing for my exam. I did want to read it though, just not under such constrained limits. It didn't take me long to get through this and all the time through reading I couldn't help but see Robert Downey Jr, specifically the false nose scene.

I was surprised by how much I was giggling reading this little book. It was a lot funnier than I ever thought a Sherlock book could be. It also had a very well contained plot but I imagine would add a lot of the general Sherlock Holmes universe.

I'll definitely be trying more of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries.
