First Perez-Reverte book I read. It made me a fan.
Other favorites are Club Dumas and Queen of the South.

The Fencing Master -

I truly enjoyed this book, I did not know what to expect but it turned out to be a great book. I did not know what fencing moves he was talking about (besides on guard, parry), but I've watched plenty of Zorro & my boyfriend fencing to get an idea. The story line was exciting - political unrest, honor, duty, blackmail, love and murder.

I liked the cinematic style of this book, the way it built tension and had lots of action, and had basically montage sequences through descriptions of the city and the unraveling political situation... but honestly, I don't really "get" this book. I don't think it's really for someone like me. I know nothing about fencing, and I know only very basic facts about this point in history. To me it felt to be lacking in an emotional core. The connection between the leads was explained but not really shown. I especially could have used more deepening of the various characters in Jaime's friend group at the cafe... that could have made for higher stakes when things really took off at the end.

All in all, this is short and I'm not sorry I read it, but it also didn't leave much of an impression on me.

Wow. Fin Excelente.
An excellent ending.

Pero, si había mucha política que me aburrí.
But there was a lot of political stuff that was boring.
Me encantó el sentido del honor al lado del supuesto ingenuosidad.
I loved the sense of honor shown beside the supposed naivety.

I was disappointed by this one. It's been on my tbr for a long time, and I want to make more on a effort to read translated books. However, the story and mystery wasn't that engaging and the Male Gaze was particularly annoying. I almost dnf the book, but decided to push through it. It took up until the second half for the action and plot to actually happen.
