3.5 stars. An excellent nerdy premise - wiggling out the secrets of a several-hundred year old coded manuscript, trying to track down as much info as they can on the tiniest of clues and a fair amount of luck. Kind of like a 1920s version of the movie the National Treasure meets Angels and Demons.
However...
- All the love lorn looks and Feeling and "want but can not" BS gets real tedious real fast
- Willy is extra obnoxious at the beginning, though she does mellow out a little as the book progresses.
- You talk about the priceless books at the library, many of which have immense value financially as well as literature-ly and why they never leave the library because of that value... and then you immediately give one of the oldest and most valued to a random *photographer* you just met in rather unwelcome circumstances? Riiiiight.
The cons won't stop me from continuing the series, though. Alex and Daisy are pretty great, and when they aren't secretly pining for each other even Gabe and Sylvia are actually quite enjoyable characters. Even Willy is growing on me... a little. But I am not so excited about book 3 that I want to spend money on it, so this one is going into my Libby holds for the next few weeks/months
