I read "Into the Drowning Deep (Rolling in the Deep, #1)" first without realizing this book existed. I loved #1 so much (added to my favorites shelf), that I wanted more of the world. In "Into the Drowning Deep", I felt the characters more served as "roles", whether as representatives of professions or plot-drivers, than actual people you could relate to, cheer for, etc. That didn't bother me at all, as I was in it for the story. But the characters in #.5 are even less developed, less important. I couldn't tell you any of their names. (Oh, "Teal" - that was a name).

This genuinely felt like a little offshoot story, or the short story you write as an outline before you write the real one. It was fine - very very short so I can't be mad about the time I spent with it - but if you're wondering whether you need to read this before 'Into the Drowning Deep'...No. I don't think you ever need to read it. Go enjoy the full story, and let the Atargatis incident from #.5 exist in the past, as it does in book #1.

I had originally seen the first book in the series when I realized you could read the story behind the tragic loss of the Atargatis and all its crew. So I jumped on ROLLING IN THE DEEP and it was even better than I was expecting!

Face eating mermaids, people! I repeat face eating mermaids!

I was excited to read about some murderous mermaids but these mermaids were even more vicious than I was expecting and it was glorious. This has me so excited to read INTO THE DROWNING DEEP. The characters were interesting but of course they all die so don't get too attached, haha. I did like how diverse the crew and characters were and I hope this continues in the next book. I'm also very intrigued by the mermaids and hope we learn a lot more about them.

Finally got around to reading the novella prequel to one of my favorite books. It's also the perfect time of year for horror. The only thing that could make it better is a sequel to the full length novel ;)

If you haven't read either this or Into the Drowning Deep, I would recommend starting with the longer novel, even if it's chronologically inverted. I liked Rolling in the Deep a lot, but it spoils something that is revealed towards the end of Into the Drowning Deep in a much more spectacular way.

It's unfair to compare but of course the longer novel is more suspenseful and thrilling. This one is a lot of fun, but more as a companion to the other book.
