Hate the live action abomination, this, however, is one of my all time favorite books. A traveling adventure story told well with a lot of humor while still having dramatic moments and real stakes. I honestly wish tLotR read more like this book does but different strokes for different folks, as they say.

⚠️ CW: war, violence, death and fatphobia ⚠️ If you've never delved into the world Middle Earth and you love a good fantasy then there is no better classic to read than anything by Tolkien. Bilbo Baggins is the last person you'd expect to go on an adventure. He enjoys a quiet, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than his pantry. Until one day a wizard arrives on his doorstep. Accompanied by a band of dwarves, Gandalf, the wizard asks Bilbo to join him on a quest to raid the treasure of the great dragon Smaug. But to reach Smaug's lair under the Lonely Mountain, the adventurers will have to travel into the wild, braving trolls and goblins, ancient magic and fiendish evil. This book, and anything written by Tolkien, will always be a masterpiece in my opinion. From his immense world building, to his incredible character development, to his overall story telling. I love everything about his books. This one is such a great adventure, and even though it is a re-read for me I still couldn't help staying up late and binging it like I did the very first time I read it because it's just so enthralling. Also I love that it has some really powerful undertones and messages. Overall, if you're a fantasy lover then I highly recommend this book.

4.5

I’ve been pushing and pushing to finish the review of this book and say goodbye because I don’t want it to be over, even when it’s been a week and I’ve already finished this book and have watched the movies again, but I think it’s time. Remember I’m not here trying to be one of those men who super analyze it and sounds like a professional reviewer lol I’m just a girl-

I’m really not sure about the rating because it could be 4 stars for me but with the incredibly amazing narration of Andy Serkis I want to give it 5 stars, so maybe 4.5 ⭐.

When I watched the movies (The Hobbit and LOTR) for the first time exactly 2 years ago I knew I wanted to read the books and see what details are missing or what are some things that changed in the adaptation, and so that lead me to finally pick up the book in 2024.

The dwarves made me laugh so much, I love the journey and how they overcame the obstacles, I love Bilbo and his big heart always ready to help even when he’s doubted or underappreciated, also there were some aspects that made me relate to Bilbo.

When I re watched the movies I loved noticing the scenes that were in the book but not in the adaptation and how they changed some things and I still love it even more (unpopular opinion, I actually LOVE the movies so much)

I think if I would’ve read this book on my own I would’ve still enjoy it but I would’ve find the pace a little slow because of the writing.

But I really think that listening to The Hobbit with the narration of Andy Serkis was such an experience and it made this book way more magical and especial. I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am that this is how I read the book. And I’ve found out that there’s new audiobooks where he narrates the LOTR books too so I can’t wait to read them!

All time favorite. It gets better with each rereading!

Listened to Andy Serkis read it, which was delightful.

Thorin and the dwarves’ greed struck me a little harder this time through, and I was glad for his moment of redemption. The contrast between them and Bilbo stuck out. But I wonder, what is worse—a love of money and jewels or a love of comfort and food? Can they not both lead to selfishness and unwise choices? But even in that, Bilbo does not return to Bagend the same hobbit.

Now I watched the movies before I read the book. There are positives to both forms of the story. I wish there was more development for all of the dwarves in the books, that they all had personalities outside of being a part of the company. Also wished there was more focus on the action, vs just saying that something happened. I enjoyed Tolkien's sense of humor and rhythm. I listened to a version of the audiobook while reading along so it helped me appreciate the songs more. I loved writing little jokes about how the language Tolkien used as it has new meanings in our present day.
'If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.'
