This book is simultaneously 2 stars and 5 stars. There were moments that I wondered why I was reading only to fall madly in love with the book a few pages later. The cozy “save the bookstore” vibe and the sweet owner were the 5 star moments. I wish we’d gotten to know Mr McCredie and the building itself better. There was so much potential in both of these characters. I kept waiting to learn the history of the building…how did it come to Mr McCredie’s family? Why didn’t they make use of the space a bit more? Couldn’t we have learned the mystery of Mr McCredie’s life a bit earlier so that we’d get to know his German family sooner and better?
Instead we wasted time on unnecessary romances. Oke just didn’t really matter. I wanted to like him but never got to know him or felt any real chemistry. And Blake was such a jerk I didn’t want him to be as important to the story as he was. Or, if he was then maybe offer him some growth or redemption?

Surprised I liked this. I didn't think I would get into it at the beginning but the characters really grew on me and there were do many different cute story lines

3.5 stars. This is a self-respecting romcom. It has substance and the characters behave in a somewhat realistic way, and there’s enough that’s not cliché and expected that it works well. Another huge part of the appeals that it set in Edinburgh. If this had been set in, say, in Chicago, it would’ve been far less interesting to me.
3.5 stars rounded up. I enjoyed this story of an out of work younger sister who reluctantly heads to Edinburgh to live with her older, pregnant, lawyer sister, two nieces, a nephew, a nanny with an agenda and a husband perpetually away on a business trip to another country. Carmen is tasked with helping one of Sophia's clients improve the sales at his used bookstore so that it can be sold in the New Year as a going concern. Sophia is a perfectionist person who succeeds at everything. Carmen failed her college entrance exams. Mr. McCready, the store owner is set in his ways but desperate to save the store and Carmen turns out to have a knack for this. Along the way, she connects with and creates community in their block of stores, with her formerly ignored nieces and nephew and with a man or two.
