Randomly picked this one up for a festive read and I really liked it. Love the setting and liked that it wasn’t just focused on the love story, but family and connection more broadly.
Honestly, this was boring. Read for book club, and we all agreed it was not very good
I feel bad giving this book such a low review, but I truly could not get into it and it took me forever to finish. It was difficult to get into the story and the characters were just uninteresting…I don’t recommend this book in particular if you’re looking for something cozy and Christmas-y

I know this girl. I’ve been this girl and I’ve hated this girl. I spent most of my reading time rolling my eyes & wanting to shake Carmen. I think that’s what the author went for. She was a pity party wrapped up in an old coat & threadbare gloves. She was jealous & envious & inconvenienced by life itself. But, then she was funny, sarcastic & empathetic after a while. She had a good work ethic & started to care for her new friends/the other shop owners.
Carmen has been made redundant at work & is living at her parents with no new job on the horizon. Against her will, she is sent to her sister’s house in Edinburgh to work for a client of her sister’s. She has to help the shop owner pull his books out of the red, so he doesn’t lose the property. Her journey introduces her to a lot of things & she starts to lose a little bit of her cynicism by becoming integral to all the people in her life.
She’s still sarcastic, though. A+ for characters.
Nicely paced. Great read for any time, but love it at Christmas.

This book was perfect for reminiscing about my trip to Scotland a few years ago with Colgan's beautiful description of scenery. The story lighthearted and fun and I just loved that it was set around the Christmas holiday.
I normally love Colgan chic lit with books involved but this book waited till the very end to be fixed and there where parts I didn't like and characters that felt wrong. I still managed to finish it and in her style she did make a good attempt at tying up the endings.
I listened to this on audiobook and loved the accents. I most loved the setting and all of the references to Edinburgh. Carmen helps save a failing bookshop and falls in love.
