So this has been recommended to me previously but I wasn't aware it was volleyball themed (idk why that specific sport has such a chokehold on me).
In general, this is a wonderful story about resilience, not giving up even when it seems all the odds are stacked against you, and overcoming the odds. And that's just Volume 1, can't wait to see where this goes.

Guys, I have to apologize to you all. I'm so sorry that I have chosen not to read this series, despite it being a hit Shounen Jump title, until now. I apologize because this was FUCKING AWESOME!

Let's start off with this: I'm not a huge sports fan, but volleyball is probably my favorite. I never played it competitively, but I loved playing it in P.E. and love watching it. So you may be thinking, "but Jenny, if you love volleyball, why haven't you read Haikyu until now?" The simple answer is because I am REALLY FUCKING PICKY about sports anime/manga. I am a character driven reader first and foremost, not a sports fan. I don't want to read/watch a series where I'm drowning in sports jargon and technical terms. Thus, I never picked this up despite the series now drawing to a close (also it's upwards of 40+ volumes and that is a TERRIFYING commitment, regardless of genre).

So then, what made me pick it up now? The last few months I've become more invested in Shounen Jump titles and decided I would give some a shot. It's important to note that I grew up on Shounen Jump titles like Yu-gi-Oh, Dragonball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, and One Piece. Now I've read Assassination Classroom and am currently following The Promised Neverland, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, and will be starting Dr. Stone soon. Suffice it to say, I'm Shounen Jump fangirl through and through, but I haven't touched some of their most beloved titles. Thus, we get to Haikyu, the one I thought I would enjoy the most, and HOLY SHIT, am I on board for this series!

What sold me me right away was the interesting dynamic between Hinata and Kageyama. They're both intensely driven to win and are extremely talented, but both have serious flaws that need addressing. I also love Kageyama's complicated emotions towards Hinata; he knows that Hinata's talented and even kind of admires it, but is too damn proud to vocalize it, and he's just so damn grumpy! It's hilarious seeing him with Hinata cuz Hinata's like this little ball of sunshine and Kageyama's this grumpy storm cloud. I do like the other characters like Sugawara and Tanaka, and the coach gets MASSIVE brownie points for not putting up with either Hinata or Kageyama's shit from the start. A true pro if I've ever seen one.

On separate but important note, the artwork is FUCKING INCREDIBLE. Oh my gosh, the use of shadows and light is just so amazing and perfectly captures the tension or hope in any given scene *chef's kiss* it's exquisite.

So, yeah. I'm already kind of obsessed with this series. I'm curious to see if it can keep me this hyped for the rest of the series, but I'm willing to give it a try. If you have any hesitation starting this series, I implore to give it a shot. It really is worth trying.

I love the anime with all my heart so I figured I’d give the manga a try. It’s already so good, and I love the art style as well as the way action is portrayed through the drawings. :)

4.5 stars. Love the art style, impressively captured action, hilarious facial expressions/postures, and character interactions of this series. Tsukki's taunting is a bit repetitive but does a good job of setting up back story and personalities (I wonder if the manga goes into Tsukki's past a bit more). I think I will quite happily keep up with both the manga and the anime, even if the story continues on the same in both.
