This is an excellent book, with good characterization, pretty good world building, and an intricate and fascinating plot, with a well balanced mix of fantasy and reality. I have no complain about the novel itself, love it, and this could easily be one of my favorite MM fantasy had not for one big problem:
I BOARDED THE WRONG SHIP!!!
SPOILER WARNING ALERT
In the beginning of the book, I totally cheered for
Don't get me wrong, Adamm is also a great character, and his relationship with his little brother, Quinn, is just adoring. I would happily cheer for Adamm and Quinn if they turned out to be a couple. Unfortunately for me (but probably to many people's delight), Adamm turns out to be the love interest of Rune. Perhaps Adamm will mature and become a fitting bf for Rune, but at this point, I just don't feel any sparks flying between the two. I find the romance in the first book between Adamm and Rune awkward (at the least) if not outright ridiculous. I just don't see any attraction. True, when you throw the two together mission after mission, sparks can fly.
I have no doubt the author intended just brotherly affection between Brand and Rune right from the beginning. There were hints early on that the ship - Brand & Rune - never existed. Still, what a pity because THAT is the type of relationship I fancy. At this moment, it's DNF for me (I'm at the point where Adamm and Rune has intimate interactions in the Westlands).
Out of respect for this book (because I think it's an excellent book and my do-not-finish tag should NOT deter people from reading this great book (or series). Unfortunately, for an OCD Virgo like myself, a wrong ship is devastating (sigh).

Brand and Rune because I'm a sucker for this companion sort of relationship. What's more perfect than a bodyguard who cares so much for you, who always stands between danger and you, who is an intelligent strategist and a brilliant fighter! Brand is the perfect companion for Rune (whom I love a lot and think is a very well written hero of this story. I adore Rune who's overcome (sort of ) a difficult past, losing his family and being raped at a young age, and has become a great fighter, a caring person though occasionally can be reckless, brave and clever. Seriously this book would have been perfect had the ship been Brand and Rune. However, turns out it's Adamm and Rune T_T.Don't get me wrong, Adamm is also a great character, and his relationship with his little brother, Quinn, is just adoring. Fast paced queer urban fantasy. I had a blast reading the book. loved the magic battles in the book. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
