Jamaica Inn is my third Daphne du Maurier novel, after Rebecca and Frenchman’s Creek, both were 5-star reads for me. Jamaica Inn has the same magical, beautiful, atmospheric writing that I’ve come to associate with du Maurier. But the story seemed a bit disconnected and the characters are not as rich nor have the depth of du Maurier’s characters in Rebecca or Frenchman’s Creek. I wasn’t engaged in the love story and I wanted more from the uncle and more about the wreckers.
Dark, brooding, and violent but in a less compelling way than other duMaurier works. It felt almost suffocatingly gloomy. The feeling something is off the whole time resonates with the reader to such a degree that it’s disturbing. I enjoyed the writing and characters but didn’t love the story.

It is very well written. I was sucked into the story after the first chapter.
it's very mysterious with a Brontë-like atmosphere.
The heroine is a strong independant woman.
I only regret the decision the heroine takes at the last page. I was a bit torn by what choice she should make, and when she did make the choice, I wasn't completely satisfied.

This is a diverting read that is entertaining enough and certainly maintains a certain amount of suspense throughout, however it does begin to show its age a little bit through an overuse of melodrama at times and the plot is somewhat predictable. All and all, not a bad beach read though.

I really enjoyed this dark novel by Daphne Du Maurier. Mary Yellan is alone in the world following the death of her parents and goes to live with her mothers sister and her husband. Joss Merlyn is the landlord of Jamaica Inn. He's a horrible man. Drink and abusive Mary barely recognises the woman her aunt has become. It soon becomes apparent that a is not well at Jamaica Inn. With no furniture or guest rooms this is not a typical Inn.
This is such a great book. It's dark, spooky and atmospheric. Mary is a fantastic character and I really liked her. This book gets 4 stars rather than 5 as I was a little disappointed with the final outcome for Mary but the story itself is amazing with plenty of action and adventure.
I was engrossed in the story. Enjoyed the twist. Will continue to read through Du Maurier's works.
