When I picked up the book, I thought the story was going to take place in Jamaica and people were going to be guests at an bustling inn in the 19th century. I was mostly wrong. The story takes place in 19th century Cornwall, England and focuses on a place called Jamaica Inn and the people associated with it. All I can say is du Maurier really brings the story to life and it’s one that you will not forget.
However, one aspect that I want to mention is the relationship between Mary and Jem. I don’t understand why at the end Mary had a plan and convictions of her own that she wanted to follow through with and Jem was so unbending that she had to give up what she wanted so he could continue to live a life of instability, and horse- thievery? And she’s ok with being a part of that?
He could have tried to live Mary’s life or step up for Mary in another way but she dropped the life she wanted like a hot potato, and said she wanted to him minutes before their ultimate decision was made.

Gonna stay spoiler free here, and say that this is my first du Maurier. If you even want to tromp around on some spooky moors, this is the book for you. As for me, I found this very readable, and was surprised to find a female main character who openly speaks her mind (and the men listen to her, and then compliment her for acting "like a boy". This is a historical novel written around 1936. Sadly, after a major plot point (and with about 150 pages to go) I lost interest in the story. Towards the end, I just wanted it to end. I'm curious to see how this in handled on film and plan to check out the Masterpiece Theater version.
