Dark, mysterious and full of peril. I now understanding everyone's love of Du Maurier's work. Having been to Bodmin Moor myself recently I understand the desolate eerie place it can be - especially in the fog. Loved the tension and the twist - great read and have already purchased two more of her books
I love the Wuthering Heights vibes in this book - it is your prototypical gothic romance. The setting is incredibly vivid and the mystery is thrilling.
I did not like this book as well as Rebecca or My Cousin Rachel, because I felt that the focus was more on the plot and setting than the characters. The characters were not as fleshed out and, in my opinion, lacked development. Other than that, though, it was amazing and I would definitely recommend.

Iš visų 4 skaitytų Daphnės knygų, šioji, deja, prasčiausia. Nepatikėjau nei meilės linija, nei veikėjais, nei įtampa mane kažkaip supurtė. Nedomino didysis siužetinis posūkis, kuris nepasirodė man jau toks uch, ach, och – labai jau kuklus, palyginti su kitais, Daphnės aprašytais. Ir gal čia kalti mano lūkesčiai, iki dangaus su Prancūzo įlanka, Rebeka, Reičele sukelti, o gal tiesiog natūralu, kad iš visų autoriaus knygų kažkuri turi būti toji, mažiausiai patikusi. Bet nors neturiu priekaištų nei teksto sklandumui, nei vertimo gražumui, Jamaikai lieku šiek tiek abejinga.
Neabejoju, kad knyga galėtų patikti tiems, kurie aikčiojo skaitydami „Vėtrų kalną“ ar „Baskervilių šunį“ – būtent su jomis man Jamaika atmosferiškai susisiejo labiausiai. Bet negalėjau nesinervinti, matydama tokį užknisantį seksizmą – tiesa, jo ir kitose autorės knygose daug, neišvengiamai, bet čia jau toks britkus, toks TV Pagalbinis, kad net burnoje žodžiai veliasi. Čia bobos vištos putpudak, tik ėdalo padavimui tinkamos, net jei pagrindinė veikėja ir tariamai stipri, drąsi ir savo laiką lenkianti. Bet neaiškios man liko to priežastys – kaip silpnos, palaužtos motinos auginta, kažkur kaimo glūdumoje, paprasta kaimietukė išauga į tokią savarankišką, drąsią ir stiprią moterį? Na, galai nesueina ir viskas. Galiausiai ir blogiukas, tas tariamai paslėpsnius kaitinantis, man čia toks nelabai seksovas – jei elegantiškas, „leisk aš tave nupiešiu..“, išsilavinęs ir laisvos sielos piratas iš „Prancūzo įlankos“ nesudrebintų tik akmeninės širdies, tai šitas toks labiau blogiukas ant pyrdos (ok, ant arklio), su „No ragrets“ tatūške ant krūtinės. Žodžiu, tikrai ne fire of my loins, kaip kad Nabokovas sakė.
Skaičiau ir jaučiau, kad puslapius iki pabaigos skaičiuoju. Knyga trumpa, o ir nors suskaičiau greitai, man vis tiek prailgo – nei į veikėjų gyvenimus įsijaučiau, nei jų baigtis man rūpėjo, nei pats siužeto vystymas įtraukė. Ir jei pradžioje atrodė, kad čia bus gotiška pelkių niūruma ir tamsuma, viskas purvina ir gal net kiek mistiška, tai deja – daugiau patoso ir pritempinėjimų, mažai įtampos ir noro skaityti toliau. Vienintelė Daphnės knyga, kurios savo bibliotekoje nepasiliksiu.

This was positively creepy in some moments and dark. It was a perfect October read for me. I found the Uncle terrifying at times, mainly due to a fantastic narrator for the audiobook. She made the story come alive.
You could really feel du Maurier's love of the area in her reverent descriptions of it wild and occasionally violent at times beauty. Incredibly well written and I was absorbed in it.

After reading Rebecca I brought this book because DdM's writing voice had captured me (and the cover is beautiful!)
I then left it on my to-read shelf for about a year, afraid of being disappointed.
What a fool I can be.
What I love about DdM's novels is the descriptive landscapes that leave no stone un-mentioned, and the tense atmospheres that grab you and make the reader feel like they are a shadow in the dark, quiet corner of the book.
Also the female protagonists, because they are normal- Mary who uses her ingenuity in a time, and place, that tried to stifle her and keep her quiet... and yet she manages to escape and the truth.

I came into this book with high expectations as I love Rebecca so much. The ending was exciting but I just felt like there wasn’t much going on throughout most of this book. Overall I did enjoy it though.
Compared to the other Du Maurier books I've read, this was really disappointing. I read Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel and they were both incredible but this just wasn't in that same league. It wasn't bad but I thought I'd love it and I just didn't.
Read for book club. Mary goes to live with her Aunt at Jamaica Inn and finds things are not as great as she thought they were....
