A great gothic novel with all the right ingredients - the desolated landscape, the threatening inn, the violent innkeeper, the mysterious shadows, the strange vicar, the outlaw, the orphaned young woman... Very atmospheric and mysterious throughout.
Never falling for the “auto-buy” concept about an author ever again. This book had a nice beginning and was very well-written in the way I’d expected it would be, but the plot got so boring so quickly that I lost my excitement without even having read half of it — and to say that it got boring is actually quite a lot because there was some WILD shit going on. To be honest, I couldn’t bring myself to care about any of the characters and the pacing of the narrative was just all over the place; it genuinely made me feel like I spent less time reading War and Peace than this. Also, the “twist”? I could see it from a mile away. I do blame a little bit of my disappointment on my high expectations, though, because it would be unfair to say that the synopsis doesn’t give a pretty honest description of what you’re going to get out of the book… In the end I guess Rebecca really was this book’s Rebecca lmaooooo

This wasn't as great as Rebecca, but still very good. Not only was the plot intriguing, but I learned some about British history that I wasn't familiar with.
Side note: It's fun for "Doc Martin" fans since the book is set in Cornwall.

I thought this book was just as good as "Rebecca." There was lots of description, which usually I'm not a big fan of, but in this case it helped create a more dark atmosphere, although at times I did skip them. I liked the main character Mary as I thought she was a complex female character - she was strong and independent, but still scared of her uncle , it made her feel a lot more real. Loved it!
This was an interesting read. I had high expectations as I really enjoyed Rebecca and had heard a lot of good things about this book.
However it didn't really do much for me. It was interesting and reminded me a bit of Wuthering Heights at first, but then I just found it to be really slow. I will say though that the violence was very intense, I didn't realise how much until I had a nightmare after reading one of the chapters in the middle!
The story picked up again towards the end and kind of saved it. But overall it was just okay for me.
