Maurier is a master of her craft whose haunting prose and storytelling remains unmatched. Much like Mary Yellan, I feared Jamaica Inn and was thankful when the story ended so I could leave that terrible place behind.

Horse thieves are the sexiest. It is known. I haven't seen the mini series adaptation, but this was a fun Gothic murder-y time with Jessica Brown Findlay in mind as Mary.

What an unexpectedly great - and underrated - gothic literature classic! Why this is not more famous than Rebecca is beyond me, as it is SO much more entertaining and has much more likeable and engaging characters. Du Maurier once agains has proven herself the mistress of the plot twist - similar to Rebecca, there was a turn in this I didn't see coming! Please let's make more film adaptations of Jamaica Inn so I can fulfil my fantasies about Jem Merlyn ;)

Dark in atmosphere, tone, and plot, with more action than "Rebecca." Du Maurier's heroine the kind of brave that comes from being no-nonsense. My only frustration was with how the romance was handled.
