Jamaica Inn is my fourth Daphne Du Maurier novel and just like the others, it did not disappoint! I loved the sort of mystery aspect of this and I found myself having no idea how the plot was going to progress. There was constant action and I loved that Mary didn't wait for someone to come and save her - she had her own plan (even if it didn't work out!). I had my suspicions about the Vicar but the novel made me doubt myself near the end! This was the last novel by Daphne Du Maurier that I have on my shelf so I can't wait to pick up another!

This was less subtle than her other books, and there was also a bit of "she was a woman and that's why she felt that way/did that thing", however I did still enjoy it for the most part

Not as gripping as Rebecca, and I felt I should have been more scandalised, and more impressed by the main character who was brave and sensible, but not that exciting. Having said all that, DuMaurier is an incredible writer and even if this book had been boring, which it wasn't, I think I would have still enjoyed her prose.
A thrilling tale of smugglers, murder and romance in Cornwall, full of threatening, haunted and questionable characters, and with an undercurrent of suspicion and urgency. Deliciously sinister!
I thought this book read very modern despite the time that has passed since publication. It was very engrossing and creepily atmospheric. TBH It's almost a 5 stars except I wish it had ended differently.
