The way I view many self-help books is this: We all have to start somewhere. And for those just starting, I do think this is a good read. However, as someone who is not just starting—and for whom breath work could only do so much—this book was just fine for me.

I do think the RULER system is a good springboard, and the mood meter is an applicable thought tool. This book is best geared towards parents and teachers, as it seems much of Dr. Brackett’s work is geared towards molding the next generation. Where this gets limited is for those out in the workforce who can gain the emotional regulation for ourselves but will face the roadblock of management and executives who don’t buy into emotional intelligence. It’s not just the next generation who can benefit from EQ when they enter the workforce, it’s all of us right now.

There was a lot of focus on school settings, especially students and teachers.

Discussing Permission to Feel was pleasant and energizing! My personal favorite parts were: RULER, integral and incidental emotions, the mood meter, the idea of mindset, bringing third-person language into therapy, the depth of language in some cultures, and hearing from our counselors/educators.

Read this because Brackett was going to come teach at our district's personal development day last Thursday...and that didn't happen. But I am glad that I read this. There were some real nuggets of wisdom that I will hopefully remember when I am teaching in real life.

Brilliant! The best "self help" type book other than "The Happiness Trap" I've ever read. Brackett explains the importance of emotional intelligence in every aspect of our lives, and breaks down how to express and regulate all emotions in easily actionable steps. Made me feel empowered and excited to be an emotional human being!
