This story could have worked if it wasn't about pedophilia. As it is, it is the most disgusting book I have ever read.

Vile. I read this book because I enjoyed 100 years of solitude, and Marquez has such a renowned reputation. But this book was disgusting, valorising pedophilia and rape, objectifying women from such a perverted, old male gaze. I imagine that this book was only ever greenlit because it was written by Marquez. No new author who pitched a book about a 90 year old man who wants to have sex with a  14 year old prostitute while she sleeps would get published, and rightly so. Disappointing, creepy and disgusting. I lost some respect for the author, because you can't help but wonder where these ideas come from. Obviously fiction and life are not the same, but such vivid, perverse musings stem from somewhere in him
