I liked Nick Gentry from the previous book, "Lady Sophia's Lover" and I wanted to know more about his distrurbing past. What is interesting in this book is that he is not one of those rogue men and rascals, he actually slept with only one woman (prostitute actually), and then fell in love with Lottie. Unfortunately the plot wasn't very interesting, and Lottie became annoying with her role of being a victim who apologized all the time. I also got annoyed when he came back home (after almost violently attacked her because of his nightmare) and immediately started having sex with her. Hello? Does sex always solve anything? No, and those scenes can be only irritating. But it was nice to see how patient she was with him.

I thought this was an engaging book with an interesting storyline. The plot was fairy well-paced, the writing was strong, and the characterisations were good. I liked both main characters. Lottie was a little flat, maybe, but I thought she was quite sweet and I enjoyed the idea of her enthusiasm for experiencing new things. Nick was much improved from the previous book and I liked how his personality developed as the story went on. I thought both of their backstories were handled well,

they both accepted and talked each other through their pasts in a way I thought was quite sweet.

Their relationship was good. I thought their chemistry was strong from the start, and they had quite a interesting dynamic. It felt quite tense and angsty at points between them, which I enjoyed, but they also had some very sweet, loving moments, as well as some very hot ones.

I also really liked that she found out the truth about his deception very early on - it made things more interesting to me as the story could go in new directions.

The side plot with Radnor was okay, it had some good twists and turns

I liked that there was no vengeful killing at the end, and that he simply took his own life. He was a truly nasty little character, and I also had very little sympathy for her family except for her sister. It wasn’t my favourite kind of plot, but I thought it was done well for the most part.

Also - I really liked the character of Gemma at the start.

I’m not normally a massive fan of sex scenes involving other people, but her involvement in the prologue and the first chapter was actually quite touching and sweet, and I thought it was a nice inclusion.

The only thing I really, definitely did not like was the way

Nick was strong-armed into returning to his title, and giving up his work as an investigator. It seemed really alien to me as a reader that he would do anything other than detective work, because he seemed so clearly suited to it. I found this part of the story really disappointing and I wish there had been a different conclusion wherein he could have accepted his title and continued doing police work, even if it was privately, as it felt really forced to make him give up that side of himself.

It’s a well-written book, engaging, with an interesting plotline. I really liked the main relationship and most of the plot, but I think there were some elements of it that didn’t work so well.

I would recommend it if you want a marriage-of-convenience historical romance with a lot of angst and drama.
