Plenty of reviews already talk about this one not being the best Chandler novel. The truth is in the opening few chapters he lays in a few clues that give you a pause and then when it ends the way the clues directed you, there is a "sigh" of disappointment.
I am going to read other Chandler so it didn't turn me off, but ironically as I was renewing my book from my local library, someone had placed a hold on it. How many people had checked that book out prior to me recently? Hurumph.

So fun! So atmospheric. So immersive.
Gawd, I just adore the cunningness and sass of Philip Marlowe. He played the game and he played it well.

Philip Marlowe is a private eye, it is his job, he is doing a job, he can do this job - and he is also seeing the world for what it is. Dreary. Bitter. Futile. He is making us look at our world.
As a murder mystery, this is better, more intricate, more intelligent, more complete than 'The Big Sleep', but that is a better, more compelling book. This isn't much worse though.
Read both. Read Chandler. Our world hasn't changed much in the last 70 years. One of the other books I have started is 'The Dark Knight Returns', and that one smells the same as this.
Ray Chandler is the Poet Laureate of Sleaze Street. Indeed, was the poet laureate of Sleaze Street, a position now taken up by Frank Miller. Here's to them both.

this was the best marlowe book i’ve read so far. i’ve only got two left. this book was awesome with a lot of interconnected storylines. i found it quite hard to follow but i took some notes and a character map and it made sense. this would have been a 5 star book but the ending was very lackluster in my opinion. the ending of this book really starts like 40 pages before the actual last page
Got it as a birthday gift and didn't really like it. Maybe because I'm not that much into reading mysteries, maybe because it seemed a bit flat but it didn't leave much of an impression on me, really.
I'm becoming a really big fan of Chandler. He has a wonderful way of describing characters and the places where they find themselves, and the dialogue is smart and funny. This book is definitely worth checking out - particularly if you've seen "The Big Sleep" and enjoyed it.
