DID NOT FINISH: 40%

The book isn't grabbing me, and even reading ahead, I am not really interested in the story. It's part 1 of a duology, where I don't see myself wanting to even start book 2.

I've seen this marketed a lot as YA, but honestly think it fits better into the Adult category - not because of any particular content warnings, but just the way that the characters and situations were written. Even though Inez is a very naïve 19-year-old, the way the story itself flowed felt much more Adult than YA - maybe it was the pacing? the characterisations? I'm not sure, honestly.

Overall, I did enjoy reading this, but felt that the pacing was overly slow - partly my annoyance with this could have been that I'd been led to believe it was a standalone... but even then, there was very little sense of excitement or things needing to be done quickly (until the very last quarter of the book). I also struggled to properly connect with any of the characters or care about what they were going through. I did want to solve the ongoing mystery, but wasn't too fussed about how it happened.

All in all, I think this was fine, but I'm not sure that I will be lining up to read book 2.

Been staring at the wall for 5 minutes now. That quite literally came out of nowhere to me. I was expecting his betrayal from the first chapter but somehow it still caught me completely off guard?? I literally READ that line on tik tok and just blocked it out??
On a positive note, I loved loved loved the setting in Egypt and found the story to be so intriguing that I couldn’t put it down. As an ancient history student the plot and being able to follow all the historical facts with extra knowledge had me ecstatic. Who doesn’t love to read about their exam material? It also reignited my want for an archeology degree so! The Egypt + archaeology combo will ALWAYS get me.
And don’t even get me started on the tension
