The marketing for this book mad me expect something like The Mummy. Unfortunately I didn't get it.
The plot feels like an excavation itself. There is so much rubble and so little treasure. Some characters might reappear in the second book, but many so far seem like they could have been edited out and only introduced later if necessary. In general it feels like a lot of needed editing simply wasn't done. It's little stuff, but it amounts to annoying after a while. I don't appreciate I have to read the second book in the hope to get answers to the meagre plot, this probably could have been done in one book leaving out all of the distractions.

I just thought it was interesting that a book written about Egypt, and the exploitation of Egypt’s artifacts and dedicated to preserving those artifacts for Egyptians, had no main Egyptian characters.

With vibes of the 1999 film The Mummy, this historical fiction with sprinkles of fantasy was a delight! The plot twists were intense and not too obvious and the ending had me itching for the 2nd book. A wonderful duet!

such a good premise so I kept reading thinking the writing would get better. what a waste of time. super self centered character, 80% descriptions of her outfits and almost every other sentence is an “I” statement. very little exploration of other characters and the most interesting portion of the story happens in the last 8% of the book. like no build up or foreshadowing of the plot twist, so it was surprising in a way that bad story writing is, like “oh really? That’s the direction you chose to go in?” no way in hell im reading the second book or the rest of this series. I can easily figure out what’ll happen based on reviews, bc this story’s major plot points can be summarized in three sentences or less. And don’t get me started on the romance. the writing was just so disappointing. Main character goes all the way to Egypt to fall in love with a white man? Maybe I would have enjoyed this more if I read this in like the fourth grade
