I read this very quickly, but it is a bit of a ground building installment in the series. Not as much personal development of our main characters but more an expanding of the characters that we follow in the series. Still compulsively readable though.

The cassandra sangue may be free thanks to the Others, but they're not safe yet. The girls are struggling to adapt and survive - if they want to survive, that is. So now it's up to Meg Corbyn and the human pack to understand more about the nature of blood prophets to help them follow the path Meg created. Not to mention the Humans First and Last movement that has been gaining even more traction since the previous novel, making tensions between the two races. When Lizzy, Detective Montgomery’s young daughter shows up out of nowhere, the mystery truly begins to unravel.
Once again, Anne Bishop sets up a wonderful story to the backdrop of this world that she carefully created. I enjoyed following along with Meg and her friends as they worked to discover and understand what it means to be a blood prophet because they are the girls’ only hope for survival. And as Meg learn more about herself as a blood prophet, the more she continues to develop as a character.
It was also very interesting to see a deeper insight into the Others’ cultural outlook on children as they are compared to humans. You can see how they value the children in their society as they react to more discoveries they make about the people associated with the blood prophet compounds. Even with Lizzy, a human child stranger, they treat with an amount of care and compassion, further showing how important children are to the Others. The reader is also given some insight on why the terra indigene speak the way they do and how it adds to their verbal hierarchy. These developments add more depth to an already complex species, and there is still even more to learn about them through the hints she left in the story.
It's clear that the conflict between humans and Others is going to come to a head very quickly in the near future, based on the events of this novel. With the Humans First and Last movement gaining such public traction and causing the conflicts between the two races, the Others will not stand for it much longer. As the residents of the Lakeside Courtyard are going to be the turning point of the growing tide, I look forward to seeing how Meg, Simon, and the rest influence the future of the two species.
