Engrossing tale whose sinister aspects are made darker and the mood bleaker by the threat of volcanic eruption that is always in the background.

I want to like this series much more than I do. While I can see what the author is trying to do - I find the misdirection in all three novels to date to be annoying - it's almost as though halfway through each book he suddenly realizes that he has no idea 'who did it', and has to add a few more characters. Once in a series is understandable, but in all three it's just plain dull.
I also find it very difficult to actually like any of the characters. Ari Thor especially needs a good talking to by someone a whole lot less self-centered than he is.
So why do I read these books? Well, I have a love of all things Icelandic and I keep hoping they'll get better.
I must also state that the translation leaves something to be desired - missing words, incorrect words. It's all quite painful and detracts from a story that should be a whole lot more intriguing than it really is.
