Wow.
I can honestly say that it’s been a year or two since I’ve enjoyed the reading experience of a book as much as I enjoyed Plum Bun. Fauset’s writing is, to me, reminiscent of many of the other greatest writers (Morrison and even Woolf just to name a couple). Her characters and the scenes she paints feel so ineffably alive!! I could smell the dinners of Angela’s childhood home, feel the various aching kinds of loneliness she experiences throughout the novel, and share in her feelings of first joys and loves. I really can’t praise Plum Bun enough and I’m happy that Fauset is (in some circles) getting the praise she deserves for having been one of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance. This is for sure my favorite read of 2023 so far and it’s going to be a hard one to beat.
