I hadn't realised this was a translation until I looked it up for this review! The language is perfectly smooth and natural, the sign of a really good translation. The art style is gentle and mostly realistic, which enhances the story’s charm.
The story is fun, too, although it does feature teens getting literally blackout drunk which may be an issue for some readers. Ella manages to steal some random objects while drunk, not realising she's in the house of her crush, Madeline. While attempting to return the items to a random house, Madeline discovers her, and the pair begin to work together. The narrative covers things like kleptomania, feeling left out at parties, and not forgetting your friends for your crush, all things that teens can struggle with.
I loved that nothing was demonised and no one was thought less of. Ella's friends more or less just call her an idiot and immediately throw themselves into helping her out. It's a great, heartwarming read for teens and I think it's going to go well.
Book Recommendation: The Sad Ghost Club by Lisa Meddings is another graphic novel series for teens, featuring real situations they might find themselves in and an honest, open look at mental health - in this case, depression and introvert-ism. It's a great partner for Thieves.
Movie Recommendation: If you’re looking for a movie with a similar vibe, Easy A is a perfect match. It's a teen comedy with a witty, heartwarming look at high school life, misunderstandings, and personal growth. Much like Thieves, it balances humour with moments of real emotional depth, and it deals with navigating crushes, peer pressure, and finding your identity.

Sweet, breezy, and genuinely funny, Thieves is a fresh and fun queer YA rom-com that kept me smiling throughout. It has a kind of Scott Pilgrim mischief and style, with two central characters who were both flawed and relatable and charming. The art is gorgeous, as with every French comic I've ever read, and I'm definitely going to pick up another of Byron's books based on this.
Also, I love that because it's France, every teen is smoking cigarettes at all times haha
