I love these books so much. They're just so fun and what's not to love about kick ass spy girls? So glad I decided to reread this series!
Wow. That was a really quick read, and a really good one at that. Much better than the first book. I'll definitely be continuing the series. 4.5 stars (rounded to 5).
Personally I found Cross My Heart and Hope To Spy a lot better than the first book. Why? Probably because I got used to all the parenthesis and stuff so the writing style didn’t irk me as much.
What I loved about Cross My Heart and Hope To Spy were the male characters especially Zach. ~squeals~ I mean, he’s gorgeous looking and he can protect me, ya know? :) So cuteeeee! Plus I love how he’s not afraid to show what he’s feeling especially for Cammie. Gotta love a guy with guts.
Cammie basically annoyed me. She’s always so…I don’t know, whiny about Josh and stuff. And she often relieves her final exam with Josh when he came crashing through the wall in an attempt to save him. (SO FUNNY!!!) So basically she got on my nerves.
The plot was pretty good in general. But I felt like it lacked action. The only real action was the pop exams that Joe, the CoveOps teacher, gives at random intervals. Other than that, I felt as if the story didn’t have much going on – besides the obvious chemistry between Zach and Cammie (still swooning about Zach…~~)
Anyway, another thing I enjoyed was the mysterious-ism about the Blackthorne Institute and how there were times when it was really confusing about whether or not they were aiming to sabotage Gallagher Academy. It added some elements of surprise into the novel and that was pretty refreshing. I mean, it even confused me, the one who’s best at predicting the end. :P Hahaha.
Overall, I found Cross My Heart and Hope To Spy a fascinating sequel and am definitely looking out for more Gallagher books!

Reading this brought back all of the memories of why I love this series so much. Why despite having read this for the first time five years ago, I still push it up to the top of my favorite books list all the time.
This book is my comfort food, and without fail, it always make me smile and swoon and laugh and a tad sad at times.
Cammie is one of my favorite girls ever, perhaps because of her endearing awkwardness, something I relate to quite well, and her honestly entertaining commentary and thoughts. She's natural, despite her impressive skills as a spy-in-training, and a normal teenage girl suffering from the lingering effects of The Subject (to prevent spoilers).
She has her own loyal crew of her friends: the charmer Bex, genius Liz, and versed in real-world Macey (who is one of my favorites surprisingly. Plus introduce us to Preston soon please.)
Friendships are a strong part of Ally Carter's books and I love that about her books. From Bex with her kick-butt attitude and fierce loyalty, to Liz with her sweet and optimistic outlook that never fails to make me smile, to Macey and her much-needed boy translations and her grounded cool, they're the best friends a girl could ask for.
I started to protest, to hang back and buy a few more seonds, but Macey grasped my shoulders and spun me around to see Bex. And Liz. Both of them were smiling.
And we can never forget the romance aka the first meeting between Cammie andmy true love Zach, the kind of boy that makes you lose your cool and looks good doing it. I'm infinitely biased in saying this, but despite his smirky-ness I ABSOLUTELY love this guy. (But then again, I may have been slightly irritated and frustrated by him at first when I read it before.) He's charming, handsome, and for Cammie, the girl who is still figuring out the mystery of boys, confusing. He's not without his moments though, and I loved seeing the different faces he seems to have.
"You're the Gallagher Girl. You figure it out."
One of the shining points in this series for me is the touch of serious, heartfelt moments that dot the pages of the books. While they can be a bit fluffy at times, and charming and more cutesy than you'd expect from a spy book, the moments when a character drops their guard(which rarely happens when you're a spy-in-training), and you see them.
Or maybe crying is like everything else we do—it's best if you don't get caught.
If you've never read this series, I highly recommend it, for the wonderful experience that is sure to follow and you'll be wishing you were a Gallagher Girl along with the rest of us. :)

The second book in the Gallagher Girl series, this novel is both humorous, and serious at points.
if i was at the National Mall doing a very important countersurveillance assignment for my cove-ops class and zach goode tried to talk to me I would simply let him. rip to cammie morgan but I'm different.
Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy is an exciting installment in the Gallagher Girls series, as now Cammie and Bex are on the CoveOps track, and are on their way to becoming field agents. Cammie promised her mother to not break rules this semester, but that was false as soon as it was made. Now, the fact that her mother and her teachers are keeping things from the student body means that it is time for her to investigate, especially with the introduction of the Blackthorne Boys as sort-of exchange students. She was already outwitted by Zach during a CoveOps mission, so their relationship begins a bit competitive and more or less on suspicious terms. She doesn't trust him, and there are too many things they don't know about Blackthorne so she is wary about his motives and his real personality.
A central theme of the book is legends vs reality. So, in this spy-vs-spy game of what is real, Cammie has to keep hold of her legend (that of a dutiful daughter) while also being herself (the Chameleon) - a tightrope that she doesn't know how to walk on. The other interesting thing are the Boys themselves - they seem to be a counterpart boy-spies school, but there is something off about them. And her father's history (or at least Joe Solomon) seems to intersect with the school, so there is something there.
Despite being a re-read, the fact that it has been a while means that I nearly got to enjoy this book as if I was reading it for the first time. I was in a state of perma-grin for most of the book, because Cammie is entertaining and humorous, and I loved hers and Zach's dynamic (frenemies-turned-lovers is one of my favorite tropes). I look forward to re-introducing myself to further books in the series.

Zach.
