Didn't get through Part I. If is definitely not an uplifting book. I wish I had seen some content warnings before reading it. Interesting content, but too emotionally draining for me.

This book begins with the perspective of a girl of Dakhóta and Lakhóta heritage, then follows back to her mother and her grandmother when they were children. Each girl has a doll who carries stories through to the end of the book.

The structure of this book was really powerful, showing the impact of the traumas before the events/circumstances leading to the traumas. This novel really brought home the idea of generational trauma while showcasing the resilience and perseverance of the characters as individuals as well as their family, culture, and stories.
