4 stars.

Okay, I really liked seeing Kou and Futaba as an official couple. I also liked how they helped Kominato try to confess to Murao. I think it was so cute how he was so nervous about their date going well and confessing, while Murao was just cool as a cucumber. I think their confession scene was really sweet and I liked that he told her that Mr. Tanaka was moving before he properly confessed. That's just very him, and I liked that she already fell for Kominato when she said yes and didn't waver after finding out about Mr. Tanaka. (Sidenote: Kou changing his last name back to Tanaka was really sweet.) Also, it was insinuated that Kikuchi and Kominato's sister might have a thing together. I'm not sure how I feel about that but whatever. I just hope that he will be okay. I liked how the story came full circle with Kou and Futaba standing under shelter while it's raining. That final moment was really cute.

Now for the real scene stealer, THERE WAS A BONUS STORY FOR STROBE EDGE!!! AND IT INCLUDED TODA, THE BEST GUY EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TODA, MY BELOVED, I THOUGHT I'D NEVER SEE HIM AGAIN!!! I like his friendship with Ninako and how they confide in each other about things that they have a hard time telling those who are closer to them. I also liked seeing his girlfriend and even though I know he had nothing but good intentions when he broke up with her, I'm glad he realized that their relationship is strong and that they should give it their best shot. It was nice to see Ninako, Ren, and Kou too. Interestingly, I think after completing Ao Haru Ride, it occurred to me even more how young and immature the kids from Stobe Edge are. Io Sakisaka really shows these two different groups of kids at different stages of their lives. I don't think the Strobe Edge would have handled the situations in this series the same as the Ao Haru Ride kids and vice versa. I think both groups of kids are immature, of course, but I feel liked she portrayed the Ao Haru Ride kids as slightly more grown up and a bit more mature in their experiences and thought processes, which was very subtle but really impressive to me.

I still have a lot of respect towards Io Sakisaka and look forward to checking out more of her work. I think that this is the stronger series but I feel like I might have enjoyed Strobe Edge a bit more, probably because it was my first series by her and I went into it with no expectations (I still think that Strobe Edge deserves an anime (the wings scenes!!)). However, I think the character work she did in this series was really good and shows that she became a stronger writer.

A good ending.

I had a lot of problems with this series along the way. I found the pacing uneven, and the middle story arc conflicts felt artificially designed to stretch out the story. However, this volume brought the story to a close in a satisfying way. Even though side characters had their endings, too, the main romance was always the focus. It was well done.

What I appreciated most where the author's comments. At one point, she admitted that she had grown to detest the previous story of hers, Strobe Edge. She began to see it as competition to Ao Haru Ride. Eventually, she felt AoHa had come into its own, and she could begin to love Strobe Edge again. She even added a Strobe Edge story as a bonus in this final volume.

As I read the bonus story, I instantly recalled all of the characters and their personalities. Even though I hadn't read the story in five or more years, it was such a strong story that I immediately identified with it again. All of the characters had clear motivations, their conflicts made sense, and their character growth felt organic. I had felt so good about AoHa's ending until I read this bonus story. Strobe Edge as a whole was simply a better story. No wonder Sakisaka felt pressured as she wrote AoHa.

Still, I enjoyed the 13 volumes of this series and stuck with it until the end across several years. I had begun reading the story when fans were translating it years ago. It's nice to see its conclusion. Strobe Edge aside, this volume of AoHa will please Sakisaka fans with its emotionally satisfying ending.
