Already feels much more polished than the previous series.
his writing improves with each book and so does the narrative and worldbuilding and political commentary which is really refreshing and fun. i’m not a huge steampunk vibes kind of person and that’s the tone a lot of industrialisty books take, but this was not that! reminds me of le guin’s intro to left hand where she writes about fantasy not being about escapism but about the real world and how we live in it.

An interesting beginning to the new trilogy, I’m already unsure of how I feel about the new cast of characters.
But Abercrombie has clearly improved so much as a writer since the original first law trilogy and the new age he’s created for the circle of the world reflects this improvement masterfully, incredibly curious to see how the new trilogy develops.
Also f**k Bayaz all my homies hate Bayaz

Strengths. Strong female characters. Writing about the experience of Industrial Revolution, battle and war from different more human perspectives. Weaknesses. Story meandered and lack of dramatic tension. Pacing felt slow at the beginning and too fast in the end.
This is unquestionably Abercrombie's best book so far. In every category I can think of, he has elevated his work (character, prose, pacing to name a few). The POV characters are on the whole excellent, with no bad ones, but some that stand out above the others - a naturally occurring hierarchy due to the nature of the characters involved and the journeys they go on. My only complaint is that I have to wait twelve more months for the next one, but seeing as they're actually finished, I guess I can't complain too much.
