My Sweet Folly

This book is a mess. The prologue is the most charming thing you will ever read, and there's one sex scene (in which no physical contact is quite made) which is the hottest thing EVER), but the plot is on even more crack than usual (poisoning drugging child abuse what?) and there are several subplots that get dropped in mid-air.

I liked it a lot, but I knocked a star off for having far more plot than I want in my trashbasket Regency romances (is misunderstanding each other at Almack's not enough?!) and also for a terrible sex scene that I shall be cringing at for the next ever.

possible spoilers throughout?? idek..

ok so this weird ass book with its tonal and genre shifs mid chapter.

i LOVE epistolary novels so i was hype that this started with exchanged letters. yeah they fell in love mighty quick for exchanging 1 letter per year but it was the 1800s so i let it slide.

folie was a great heroine throughout book and had a sense of humor about herself that i really enjoyed and is rare in historical romances. but then we meet robert and the story changes to a gothic suspense fantasy mishmash that was hard to understand. i couldn't tell if robert was hallucinating or if i was. but the book was interesting so i kept going.

at a certain point there were too many characters and with these historicals you gotta keep track of they first christian names, last names and titles. dis tew much.

i went along with the genre change because i wanted to know what was gonna happen with my girl folie but by the time they got off that damn ship after robert proved himself to be a warlock and folie had amnesia i was skimming. there was too much plot and it wasn't paced interestingly enough. and this slow burn was a slow melt. i was hoping we'd follow lady jane and that weird duke i was so bored with the back and forth.

and then the ending with the possible? incestuous relationship of the father and the first wife and prinny and indian spirituality and magic and throwing voices and card tricks and i was done. didn't even care that robert and folie finally got together.

the book was well written so it hurts to rate so low but gahdamn i spent the last 25% of the book with a permanent scrunched brow over wtf was going on.
