I just finished this book and wow, what a story. Even though it is very long, the pace is good and keeps you focused for the most parts. The only time I felt it became a bit long and drawn out, was near the end, but then I did think the last chapter or 2 were well done again.
What I particularly love about this story is how a lot of the characters are so very human. I feel like there are barely any characters that are just 'good' or 'bad' people. Most of them are just humans, people who make mistakes and learn from it. Some who are forgiven, some who aren't, but even those who aren't forgiven for their mistakes still get a moment where the reader learns about a part of their personality or behaviour of which people would say 'thats what a good person would do'.
The development of the characters is great, in my opinion. You meet them when they're still very young but follow them until they're well into adulthood. You read how they experience things, how this makes them change, for (usually) the better. As the story is mostly told from the main character's pov, I feel like you notice this growth a lot from her, but there are also a fair amount of chapters focussed on the love interest, her experiences and how it changes her.
I understand why some people might not have liked the ending (not counting the extra's in this), but actually I thought it was great, and gave room for some interpretations of your own.
However, having said that. I did really appreciate that the extra chapters were written as well. They gave even more insight in the story as a whole, and definitely answer some questions that remain unanswered at the official end.

Very charming book indeed. I have had many sleepless nights in order to finish it. The slow burn romance was delightful because the book presented many events that happen in between, thus keeping the readers on their toes through the whole story. The reason I give it 4 starts is because of its anticlimactic ending, a thing I've noticed occurring quite often with this author. They keep writing interesting books yet always seem to finish them in an unsatisfying way. Anyhow, still an enjoyable ride. 8.5/10
GOD IT WAS SO LONG. I really liked the ending and the premise but SO MUCH OF IT DRAGGED ON AND ON. I wish I could have appreciated the more lyrical and poetic stuff, and the authors attention to detail with regards to the kingdom’s lore was intense and I appreciate it. But if I have to hear about THOSE GODDAMN SALT RESERVES AGAIN I S2G. Lots of this book got repetitive and dragged on, and none of the characters except for Gongyang Huai and Qi Yan. Jingnu was nice but her temperament really didn't vibe with me. Overall I appreciate the story but my enjoyment of it was only 3 stars.
