There is representation of people of color, non-binary gender, sapphic love, and more.
My reason for docking it points is because I found the plot a little predictable and there are many scenes where the characters spiral with anxiety about potential outcomes of their decisions. For me personally, I wasn't in the headspace to enjoy this. I think young adults who haven't read a lot of fantasy will find the plot more fresh and engaging. And I could see the anxiety thought process being very relatable to other readers. It's just not for me.

I was really enjoying this one too up until the around the 40% mark, and then I am not sure what happened. I ran out of patience with the side characters of the cousin and girlfriend who seemed too zany and one dimensional. It seemed like the YA-ness dropped down a bit lower into middle-grade in a way I didn't like. I found myself skimming pretty hard and just reading like the middle paragraph of each page for a while. I don't know if it's just that I wasn't in the mood for it anymore?
I don't want to rate it too harshly because I do suspect this may have been my issue and the book itself has plenty of redeeming qualities, especially for younger readers and for nonbinary character representation.

lovely connections made throughout the book.

I love how the setting played such an important part in Ellory's motivations instead of just acting as a backdrop for the story; it could not have been written in a different location, and I love that.
All in all, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to someone looking for a lighthearted urban (adjacent) fantasy story about two people from very different (even contradictory) backgrounds and beliefs coming together and refusing to abandon the other.
