It feels like it could have ended here rather than be a series. I really enjoyed the folklore, the authors descriptions were just as chilling as they needed to be. I was a little disappointed at the ending but not because it was poorly wrapped up. Strong read start to finish.

HOW IS THIS A DEBUT?!?!? the world building is unmatched. unlike anything ive ever read. the characters are all so thoroughly fleshed out. even the demons they fought are well crafted. it's so difficult for me to visualize things in books, especially in fantasy, but this was definitely an exception because the imagery was incredibly vivid. love the juxtaposition of the siblings' personalities, and I loved how morally gray some of the characters are. The dialogue between them made my heart warm, made me laugh, made me tear up, and made me frustrated at times too. This book is definitely one of my all time favorite fantasies, and I'm SO happy that it's going to be a series!!

This book was so creepy and interesting. Didn't end the way I expected it to, kind of a cliffhanger, but you do get to see many things resolved in this story. The way that the afterlife is described in both the British setting and the Japanese one is interesting. I love how things are different, but at the same time they all wind together.
