Hard to imagine living in a small home with no insulation, no automatic heating source, and no food supply. I know many have issues with some of the views Caroline Ingalls expresses, but, those instances provided opportunity for our family to discuss important topics organically. Meanwhile, I cannot imagine being a parent and trying to keep everyone’s spirits up during blizzard after blizzard with no light, games, new books, etc.

Bleak HARD winter. A very scary book to think about how hard what the Ingalls family and town was going through, and knowing other towns were also going through the same thing. Not my favorite Little House book, especially stuck between two more upbeat ones, but definitely a powerful book.
I think this book in the series really fit my mood for our extended winter (although not nearly as harsh and long as The Long Winter).
I liked that in this book Laura starts to tell bits of Almanzo's life and her own, so we can see how both are growing up. I'm excited for them to start courting in the next few books.
You can rally tell how back in these days everyone really did look out for each other, they had no "me" mentality. Almanzo risked his life to help the town, Pa risked his to keep his kids warm, and so on and so on. They really looked out for each other.

I read this story when I was young and I absolutely adored it. I recently got the audio version for my kids so as to introduce them to this pioneer family. They like it. I cannot wait until such time that they can read it for themselves. It is still so charming.
