Sometimes I romanticize the whole pioneer experience of living off the land with hard work and determination being the primary ingredient of a successful life, but confronting the possibility of freezing to death or running out of food every single winter (but especially the extreme winter of 1880 in this book) gives me a reality check that brings me right back to knowing I would never ever make it in that scenario.

Another well written, detailed story. Hard to imagine going through such terrible times, but gives great insight into the lives back then. Wonderful read; kept my attention the whole time.

This is one of my perennial re-reads. I loved this book growing up. As a grown-up, I appreciate how hard Ma and Pa worked to survive. I tend to read this every winter to remind me that our winters (with electricity, heat and snow plows to easily clear roads within a day or so) aren't so bad.
