I think this is probably my favorite of the Little House series.

This is the book in the series that tells of the family's experiences surviving the winter of 1880-81 (considered to be the worst winter in the history of the country). Having to endure 7 months of blizzards, no food, nothing to heat with, no trains and no hope of getting supplies.

Of the series, this is probably (along with Farmer Boy) my favorite. The characters are amazing as ever, the plot is gripping - it's a page turner - you just really want to find out what happens next and how they are going to live through this.

This is part of my Little House re-read and highly recommended.

It just gets better and better (as, if the conspiracy theorists are right, her daughter takes a firm hand in editing/rewriting). How wonderful to read of being snowed in for so long (the cover's misleading, it's mostly a tale of being stuck in a house, worried about food and heat, for months) during the current Covid-19 crisis. Puts my complaints (can't dine out, can't hit the gym, can't rehearse my musical) to shame. I have food, heat, power, the internet, TV, every book ever written ready to download to my Kindle, and I have nothing to worry about.

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve!

See my previous reviews for The Little House series.

I felt the cold. I heard the incessant wind. Just a perfect book of the long, hard winter in South Dakota.

(4.8 but I rounded up)

This book, while having lots of waiting and working, was so fun to read! Laura and Almanzo finally met, and I can’t wait for them to get married in the next couple of books. Grace is a fun addition to the family, and Carrie is growing up so fast! It’s just the best feeling to see this family grow up, they’ve all matured so much…
