This is by far the most depressing book of the series (though interestingly, not monotonous). It's literally the long winter: the first blizzard is in October and the last is in April or May. It's really scary to think about being that isolated, in such a fierce winter, with very poorly insulated houses. I'm always amazed people survived in the past as well as they did.

Almanzo through the first half or so of the book; his insistence that it was HIS seed wheat and fuck everybody else amirite? was just so offensive to me. Glad he came around though.

Listened as an audiobook as an adult. Cherry Jones does such a great job as narrator. I was on edge as the town had to try to make due with the lack of food and supplies. Blizzards, blizzards and more blizzards. Brrr....I was glad to be cozy in bed.
It's cold, it's raining, it's time to re-read The Long Winter
Re-read this last night to try to get some perspective. Didn't help.

The Wilder family suffers through 7 months of extremely harsh conditions during a winter which was almost all blizzards. They were constantly cold and toward the end, nearly ran out of food since the train couldn’t get through to town. As always their resourcefulness and hard work carried them through to spring when things turned around.
We lost our heat once in February a few years ago and it got cold quickly! I can’t imagine living 7 months trying to huddle up to the only heat source in the house.
