The way she describes the blizzards make you feel as if you are living it through it with them.
I am continuing to read this series for the first time as an adult and this was another solid entry. I can't even imagine surviving seven months of blizzards! Once again we get a bit of problematic racism in regards to the Native Americans - but I feel like she tries to show that at least Pa doesn't think they are all bad. It just doesn't come off well to a modern reader.
I liked getting a little more of the Wilder brothers story in this book. It was a good way to keep the book from being entirely about how cold and hungry everyone was. There was also an interesting tie in to today about peoples over-reliance on new technologies and how that can cause trouble when then don't work.
It a good read for adults or kids. I'll be continuing the series.

I read this book a long time ago and still enjoyed it just as much as I did the first time. I was intrigued to find out that the winter of 1880-81 was just as hard and long as the author described it, even if some of the facts were made up.
Brrr! So thankful I never had to survive a winter like this.
I hadn't read this perhaps since I was in elementary school. I chose it today because I was feeling a bit of self-pity over having cold hands and feet in this weather. I had forgotten the warmth of the family in this book and the descriptions of the food! I was hungry for pancakes and brown bread and hot tea all day reading this!
Going for a walk in the woods after dark and then coming in to a warm house to finish this really highlighted just how much has changed with scarcity in winter.

I was going to give up with this series but the cover of the next book has a kitten, so I gotta see how that plays out.
This book is cold, it feels cold. I liked the focus on Almanzo who is one of my favorite "literary" characters.
I feel like I read this at the perfect time - right after the long winter of 2013 ended. I would have freaked out if I read it a month ago, FYI.

Perfect read aloud for this long COVID winter. The kids enjoyed imagining what it was like living through winter in early 19th century America compared with today.
This one was amazing! The family settles in the newborn town of De Smet, South Dakota, just in time to experience the worst winter in 49 years. It literally lasts from October to May. It is truly amazing that the family, and anyone else for that matter, survived. Fascinating!
